PASA is a non-profit association whose objective is to ensure that “security and related contract in Africa are solely discharged by legitimate companies complying with internationally accepted regulatory standards and the laws and regulations of African States.” PASA members pledge to adhere to the PASA Code of Principles, Code of Conduct.
The Consultancy for Human Rights and Displacement, CODHES, is a nongovernmental organisation that aims to address the causes of forced displacement and promotes the human rights of displaced persons and refugees. The stated purpose of their work is to generate a constrictive multi-stakeholder debate that raises awareness and promotes positive change for the communities at risk of displacement.
The FIP is an independent think-tank in Colombia, which aims to create knowledge on the various dimensions of the nation’s armed conflict and to establish a sustainable peace based on human rights. A particular emphasis is put on understanding how business activities contribute or intensify domestic conflict and how companies can comply with and promote human rights to change their impact on violent struggles.
The Centre for the Study of Social Justice Tierra Digna is an organisation that supports the rights of local communities affected by extractive operations. The organisation offers legal support to rural communities and ensures that their voice is adequately heard in stakeholder discussions.
Congo Mines is a documentation center for the mining industry in the DRC developed by the office of the Carter Center in Katanga as part of its project for mining governance. It aims at facilitating access to information concerning the access to natural resources, mining operations and the collection of revenues and expenditure.
The NNF is a not for profit, non-governmental organisation that provides a platform for strategic private and public sector collaboration, aimed at promoting sustainable socio-economic development activities in Nigerian communities. An example of the organisation’s aim to facilitate relationships between companies and affected communities has been the recently launched Forum on Oil and Gas for Development (FOGARD). “The Forum explores obstacles and opportunities for making better use of oil revenue; creates partnerships and acts as a coalition to promote new policies and initiatives with government, business, civil society and other stakeholders.”

LITE-Africa is a Nigerian non-governmental organization (NGO) focusing on ‘Governance & Human Rights’, ‘Sustainable Livelihoods & Health’, and ‘Humanitarian Support Services’ in the Niger Delta. As part of its ‘Governance & Human Rights’ emphasis, LITE-Africa is involved in projects and research promoting the engagement of transnational companies with communities and oil revenue transparency. LITE-Africa is currently conducting a training workshop on the ‘Voluntary Principles’.
The Institute of Democracy and Human Rights (IDEHPUCP) is a research institute at the Catholic University of Peru that aims to strengthen democracy and respect for human rights in Peru create public spaces for dialogue and debate. One of their particular aims is to strengthen private companies’ ‘respect’ of human rights. To this end, the Institute developed indicators that can help assess the companies’ human rights compliance, with a particular focus on the extractives. The Institution is further a member of the International Code of Conduct Association.
As part of the Partners for Democratic Change International (PDCI) network, Socios Perú was founded to establish a culture of dialogue and non-violence as methods of dispute management. Its mission is to create a peaceful dialogue between the state, civil society and private companies, which ensures conflict resolution processes and a democratic transformation of the Peruvian society.
The Centre for Human Rights is both an academic department and a non-governmental organisation based at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. The Centre’s includes a Business and Human Rights Unit that conducts “research on international business and human rights standards and instruments, build[s] capacity among governments, the corporate sector, academia, civil society and communities, investigat[es] the human rights and environmental impacts of business in Africa, and engage[es] with judicial, quasi-judicial and non-judicial redress mechanisms.”
Lawyers for Human Rights is a non-governmental human rights organisation and “primary contributor to clear strategic policy on the delivery of socio-economic rights for the disadvantaged.” One of the organisation’s foci is the support of mine workers’ rights through “advocacy and communications at the national and regional levels to spur dialogue with stakeholders and inform beneficiaries of their rights.”
The Legal Resources Centre is a human rights organisation that seeks to promote justice for South Africa’s vulnerable and marginalised and to contribute to the country’s socio-economic transformation. One of their focus areas is the impact of mining operations on surrounding communities and to strengthen the latter’s voice in negotiations.
