New Research Report: Costs of Company-Community Conflict in the Extractive Sector
A new report by the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative (CSRI), the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM), and Shift identifies and analyses the (hidden) costs of company-community conflicts. The research highlights that the extractive industry often fails to aggregate and understand the full costs arising from conflicts with local communities. This, the authors state, is however important as it would constitute a strong incentive for companies to adequately prevent such conflicts through sustainable relationships with local stakeholders. Identifying the (hidden) costs can thus encourage companies to engage with local communities and implement the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
