On 27 September, 2024, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on behalf of the DCAF-ICRC Partnership, participated during the second session of the 2024 Shanghai Foreign Investment and Cooperation Open Day Series: Overseas Security Risk Prevention and Emergency Response. The ICRC presented during a panel on security management and community engagement and shared examples from the Toolkit such as:

  • How to conduct thorough stakeholder engagement to identify potential risks and impacts
  • How to undertake effective community consultations with different members of local communities
  • How to work with all stakeholders (different internal departments and external private and public security providers) to ensure responsible management of security when implementing security measures and policies

The session was jointly organized by Beijing iCover Risk Information Technology and Shanghai Association of International Economic and Technological Cooperation. Attended by over 100 representatives from more than 90 organisations, including local government officials, the private security sector and insurance companies, the event underscored the need for capacity building and for more case studies and practical examples of how companies can better engage communities on their security arrangements. DCAF-ICRC will follow up with the organizers to gauge how the partners can share their expertise and support companies in responsible business conduct.
