Engaging Japanese Companies Operating in Mozambique on Responsible Business Conduct

With significant Japanese companies working in Mozambique, there is growing interest in promoting human rights due diligence and risk management across their supply chains and, more broadly, responsible business policies.

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mozambique (CCIMJ) organized an exchange with DCAF and the DCAF-ICRC Partnership to share and discuss guidance tools and support for Japanese companies in managing security and human rights risks in their Mozambique operations.

The virtual meeting was organized with the support of the Japanese Embassy in Mozambique and attended by 14 companies as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

The meeting highlighted the security and human rights risks in Mozambique that are frequently linked to operational and business challenges. DCAF-ICRC shared the Toolkit and its relevance for Japanese companies. DCAF then highlighted the two multi-stakeholder working groups active in Mozambique (Maputo and Cabo Delgado) and described how they support in building trust and identifying concrete solutions to practical challenges.
